Power cuts happen locally for all sorts of reasons: a damaged supply cable, a short, overload, weather, lightning, cables brought down by wind or falling trees. But it is not only about the weather — there is a whole range of electrical events that do damage quietly.
Voltage spikes can burn out critical components in computer systems, laboratory equipment and sensitive electrical devices. Voltage drops bring systems down mid-task. Low voltage causes electronics to draw more current, which leads to excess consumption, strain on the system and sometimes failure. Electronic products are especially sensitive to variations in supply, and are usually not protected against them at all.
And even a simple human error — a timer switch left set that cut the power while the server was running — is enough to lose data or damage a disk. Which is why you need equipment built specifically to act as a guard operating in real time.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does a UPS keep things running?
- It depends on the load. A UPS is not a generator — its job is to give you enough time to shut down properly, typically between five and twenty minutes. If you need longer continuity, that is a different solution.
- I already have a UPS — why would it stop working?
- Almost always the batteries. They degrade quietly and the unit carries on looking healthy right up until the next outage, when it turns out to give twenty seconds rather than ten minutes. Periodic testing catches that.
