Cleaning your computer, inside and out
A computer draws air through itself all day long, and with the air comes dust. Over months and years that dust settles on fans, heat sinks and boards, insulating exactly the components that most need to shed heat. The machine runs hotter, the fans work harder and get louder, performance is throttled back to keep temperatures down, and in the worst cases components fail early. Cleaning is the least glamorous maintenance there is and one of the most effective.

What a cleaning service covers

Why it is worth doing regularly
Heat is the single largest factor in the ageing of electronic components. A machine kept clean and cool holds its performance for longer, stays quieter, and is far less likely to fail without warning. For a desktop in a normal office we suggest a clean once a year; in dusty environments, or for a laptop that lives on soft surfaces, more often.
Can I not simply do it myself?
Some of it, yes — blowing out accessible vents does no harm. But opening a laptop, separating a heat sink and re-pasting a processor calls for the right tools and a certain amount of practice; done carelessly it causes more damage than the dust. If you are not comfortable with the internals, leave those parts to us.
Will you check anything else while it is open?
Yes. With the machine open it costs us nothing to check the health of the disk, the state of the battery and whether any capacitors are showing their age — so you find out about a developing problem while it is still cheap to solve.
